90 Centigrade

Restaurant review: A chilled new cosy café in Downtown Abu Dhabi

90 Centigrade
90 Centigrade

As the old saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And on weekends there’s nothing we love more than going into the city to find a stack of pancakes or some avo toast to fill our stomachs with.

We’ve got our favourite spots and dishes, but we’re always keen to find somewhere new to enjoy an early morning bite with a few cups of coffee, too.

90 Centigrade opened at the end of 2019 at the Grand Millennium Al Wahda. The name had us scratching our heads at first, but it turns out that it makes perfect sense.

It refers to the optimum temperature for brewing espresso, so you can be sure the venue is serious about its coffee.

With a chilled room styled to look like something between a living room and a café, we take our seats by the window.

We’re surprised, albeit pleasantly, to be presented with a basket of bread, still piping hot from the oven. It’s only 8am but can you really ever say no to bread? We can’t.

After carb loading we tuck into a pretty decent americano and hot chocolate while taking a look through the menu.

There are some familiar dishes alongside a few wild cards, all of which sound healthier than your standard breakfast.

The halloumi pancakes catch our eye and while we’re waiting for them to arrive, we debate whether they’ll be sweet or savoury. Perhaps not surprisingly, it’s the latter.

The lofty stack has big chunks of the cheese throughout, topped off with olive tapenade, hollandaise sauce and a fried egg.

They’re very tasty, and like nothing we can remember ever having before.

The avo toast is no slouch either. Toasted sour dough bread is topped with mashed avocado, grilled peppers, white asparagus and two poached eggs that burst at the sight of a knife. We scoff the lot and wash it down with another coffee, leaving us stuffed and satisfied.

This place is casual, inviting, comfortable and reasonably priced. Looks like we have a new regular breakfast spot.
